Nature Play & Outdoor Learning Workshops
In this fun and interactive session, we’ll take your thinking OUTSIDE the box as we discuss, imagine, and discover the endless possibilities of nature’s loose parts.
A simple stick can be a journey stick, a talking stick, a measuring stick, a dinosaur, or just a regular stick and you can use it in so many ways to encourage and enhance literacy, numeracy, arts, play, STEM, indigenous culture, history, communication, geography and so much more. Join us as we dig deep into the natural loose parts possibilities for Literacy & Numeracy, and further expand into the areas of Dramatic Play & Creative Arts, Technology & Engineering, Culture & Community, and Wellbeing.
Participants will:
• Gain an overview of the theories and practice of loose parts in learning and play
• Develop ideas and expand their thinking of the uses of natural loose parts within 5 key themes: 1. Literacy 2. Numeracy 3. Dramatic Play & Creative Arts 4. Wellbeing 5. Culture, Connection and Community
Get ready to think outside the ‘mystery box’ in this creative and fun session where “MasterChef meets the Mud Kitchen”.
Together we’ll mix in a pinch of literacy, a dash of numeracy, a sprinkling of STEM and a generous dollop of natural loose parts… all served up with a side of creative flair and topped off with a little friendly competition!
In this fun and imagination-filled session, participants are taken on a journey to discover the possibilities for stories that live within the landscapes that surround them.
Upon finding an old map, participants will imagine and explore new landscapes within familiar places around them.
The session will be introduced through storytelling to inspire and ignite imaginations, and a mystery story box invites them to take inspiration from the natural world and become ‘Story Makers’ in their new storied landscapes.
Working individually or in small groups, participants will document their stories through written, oral and digital storytelling and share their stories with the whole group.
Stonework Play connects participants with nature, creative expression, art and storytelling, using a beautiful variety of stones as the medium.
Participants will be guided through a 5 Step process of:
1. GATHERING their chosen stones
2. CONSTRUCTING their stone creation
3. RENDERING (drawing) their work on paper
4. NARRATING (writing) what they have done in story form
5. SHARING their stories and experience with the group
Stonework Play can be adapted for students in any age group - from babies to 99+, and we'll discuss and share ideas about practice and extending possibilities across different settings.
Stonework Play workshops are inspired on the work of Dr Diana Suskind and Nurture in Nature partners with her to facilitating International Stonework Play Day.

We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognise the deep knowledge, connection and caring relationship they have to the land and waters on which we play, learn and explore.
