How just playing in nature can help your child your grow to have high self esteem, resilience and strength of character.

For parents, me included, nature is a powerful ally, an often needed sense of perspective and an old friend (sometimes, sadly, a long forgotten one).

Let me explain.

Let’s start with the ‘old friend’ …

If you’re anything like me, your childhood was filled with opportunities for adventure, freedom and lots and lots of mud pies! Ah, the old days!

We climbed trees; we rode our bikes to our friends house; we knew our neighbours … and they looked out for us.

I was fortunate to have a childhood that I look back on with so many happy memories … my kids deserve to have that too. Yours too.

Most of my most cherished memories are of times spent with family and friends outside, just doing what kids do best … PLAYING!

Actually, hold that thought for just a minute.

How come there are books literally springing out of the woodwork on the subject of TEACHING kids to play?

That’s right, we now have to teach our children to play. (Oh no, not another thing to add to my to do list you groan).

AND there’s such a thing now (although not an official medical diagnosis YET) as Nature Deficit Disorder. The term was so aptly coined by Richard Louv in his book ‘Last Child In The Woods’; I’ll go into that a bit more shortly, but I think you’ll agree with me, having kids these days doesn’t seem so much like a walk in the park.

I’m just getting started here, so please bear with me … it’s going to be a trip down memory lane, and wil help you create cherished memories with your kids and strengthen the bonds you have with them.
