Using this Guide gives you the tools you need to help children understand, explore, and manage their emotions so they can see for themselves how these strategies work for them throughout their day.
"The relatable metaphors and practical strategies will gently guide you and your children on a nature-inspired adventure to explore their emotions."
- Ali Murphy, Kindergarten Teacher
This Guide Will Help Children

"It’s great to see a range of diverse emotions covered rather than just the usual few basics. This supports children to differentiate between what they are feeling, and then to understand and articulate their emotions more accurately. The vocabualary used is in words children can relate to, and that encourages movement, stillness and the contrasts in-between."
- Karen, Early Childhood Coach
Why You as an Educator, Counsellor or Parent Will Love It

"A terrific and insightful framework for understanding preschoolers’ emotions. I found myself coming back to it again and again. It was incredibly helpful while navigating challenging behaviours in our room last year and gave both our Room Leader and myself clear, practical ways to support the children in the moment."
- Paul Dickson, Early Childhood Educator

"A valuable and practical nature-based wellbeing resource that can be utilised by educators in both the early childhood and primary school sectors, as well as parents, carers, cousellors and Occupational Therapists. I really like the prompts on the emotion cards: ‘What can I do?’ and ‘How can I connect with others?’"
- Kelly Hutchings, Early Years Education Mentor and Wellbeing Leader
What Licensed Counsellors & Educator Coaches say about the Guide
"As a licensed child counselor, I highly recommend The Young Nature Explorers Guide to Emotions as an engaging resource for helping children build emotional language.
The nature-based metaphors make emotions feel clearer and less fuzzy, helping children talk about what’s happening inside.
Each card includes ways to identify and respond to feelings, blending body-based actions, calming strategies, imagination, and connection with others.
This is a wonderful resource for counselors, teachers, and parents supporting children’s emotional development."
- Kim Lange, LCMHC -
Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, EMOTIONanigans
"I love the analogies / connections between natural elements and emotions, and how they can both shift and change; there are no good / bad emotions or weather.
I think this is a clever way for children to understand and accept that emotions are not positive or negative, they can sit with them and find ways to feel and respond in appropriate ways.
I also love the connection to the senses and how their bodies feel. The pictures, faces and the words convey through visual, aural and proprioceptive / interoceptive clues that support the children’s understandings in multi-layered ways, therefore support different learning dispositions.
I like how there are additional cards that enable the children to create their own. It would be so interesting to see which words children came up with to correspond with emotions.
The cards are also very visually appealing, well laid out and use of colours that are attractive without being overwhelming. Having the different sized cards allows for great flexibility: the large ones for display or group use, smaller ones that can be taken along during offsite visits and put on a lanyard or a flip-ring set.
Lots of our services are working on emotional awareness and regulation with children, so this resource really supports those skills."

Early Childhood Coach

Hi! I'm Tania Moloney.
Since founding Nurture in Nature in 2012, I've been helping educators and parents bring the power of nature into children's worlds.
From the places I visit in my Nature Bus mobile classroom in Australia, to early childhood settings, schools, homes and conferences worldwide, I've seen firsthand how nature transforms the way children learn and grow.
Through my award-winning children's book, 'Nature Ninja Saves the Natural World', the Nurture in Nature Podcast, our immersive Campference Teacher Nature Conference, and our amazing Treehouse Educators Professional Learning Community, I've empowered educators and others to embrace nature as a powerful ally in helping children thrive - socially, emotionally, physically, mentally and in their learning too.
I believe connecting kids with nature isn't just about getting outdoors. It's about helping them grow into emotionally strong, resilient young humans who understand and care for themselves, others, and our natural world.
My mission is simple: to help you grow your knowledge, skills and confidence to open the door to nature-inspired learning opportunities, more easily, more often and with less overwhelm.
Because when we work together, our ripples of impact reach further than any of us could on our own.
I can't wait to connect and support you in bringing nature's wisdom into your children's social and emotional world through this Guide.
See you outside!
Tania
